What is Dental Bonding?

Dental Bonding is a procedure whereby a tooth-coloured composite resin is applied to one or more of your teeth to cover any damage or defects, improve the structure of a tooth, and/or enhance the overall appearance. The procedure does not take long, you do not require anesthesia, and there is no downtime (so you can continue with your normal daily routine once the procedure is completed).

What is the Process of Getting a Dental Bond?

Firstly, the tooth is prepared for the procedure by lightly etching the surface and applying a bonding liquid. Once the liquid sets, the bonding material composed of either resin or plastic, that has been colour chosen to match closely with the colour of your natural teeth, will be bonded to the surface of your chipped or cracked tooth. Lastly, the resin is trimmed, smoothed, and polished to provide you with a vibrant and natural-looking smile! The entire procedure takes between 30-60 minutes, although it can sometimes run longer depending on the particular circumstances.

Considerations

The bonding procedure can often be completed in a single office visit and can improve the appearance of a tooth significantly. However, since the plastic resin used is not as strong as your natural tooth enamel, it is more likely to stain, chip, or break than natural teeth. Bonding typically lasts 3 to 5 years before it needs repair. Your dentist can discuss with you whether tooth bonding is the right solution for you.
